The Cathedral and the Bazaar
Eric Raymond wrote the paper, The Cathedral and the Bazaar, where he described the differences he saw in the free software movement (it wasn't called open source yet). Particularly he focused on the development model linux used versus the typical structured development model used in most large organisations at the time. He marked them as the Bazaar and Cathedral models respectively. Anyways, you probably already know all this. What I found really interesting was Eric Raymond in this audio file, where he gave a talk about his paper the principles that he saw that were in play, dubbed "Linus' Law".
I really like the idea of using multiple brains and eyeballs to develop a piece of code. And that this loosely organised body of developers, working together, were creating better quality software than large organisations using the traditional closed approach. After hearing this, I've decided to try harder to actively get other people involved in my open source projects, "Bob" and "Bookkeeping".
